A simple, efficient and reproducible method has been developed for determination of nitroaromatic and nitroamine explosive residues in surface and ground water. This method provides improved SPE and LC procedures for EPA 8330A analytes. A 500-1000 mL water sample is loaded onto an Oasis HLB SPE cartridge containing 200 mg of sorbent. The cartridge is washed to remove humic matrix interferences and the analytes are eluted from the cartridge to yield a sample enrichment of up to 200:1. All components were chromatographically resolved using an isocratic mobile phase (71:13: 6 water/100 mM ammonium formate (pH 3.0)/2-propanol) and an XTerra Phenyl column (4.6 ×150mm, 5 µm). The quantitation limit was determined to be 250 ng/L using spiked replicate river water samples and UV detection.
