In this study we employed a UPLC exact mass, electrospray mass spectrometry-based metabonomic approach in conjunction with multi-variate data analysis to study the metabolic profiles in post mortem brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)  and sera samples from first-onset, drug naïve schizophrenia patients and demographically-matched controls. Initial studies on post mortem brain extracts showed that schizophrenics could  be readily differentiated from  controls. As CSF bathes the brain it was postulated that the metabolite profile would reflect that of the brain. However collection of CSF is a highly invasive procedure therefore sera samples, which can be collected more routinely, were also analysed for the presence of potential biomarkers of schizophrenia.
