Product Description

XTerra RP18 columns are general purpose, hybrid-based, reversed-phase C18 columns that incorporate Waters innovative embedded polar group technology to improve peak shape performance for highly basic compounds. These first generation columns provide superior pH stability compared to a silica-based column.

XTerra Shield RP18 Column, 125Å, 3.5 µm, 4.6 mm X 250 mm, 1/pk

Based on Waters’ patented Hybrid Particle Technology, the XTerra family of columns has allowed chromatographers to realize the full potential of their analytical and preparative separations. Silica-based packing materials have traditionally limited chromatographic potential due to restrictions on speed, resolution, pH, temperature, and loading capacity- with the XTerra family of lab equipment, these boundaries can be broken.

XTerra Shield RP18 Columns are based on Hybrid Particle Technology, in which one out of every three silanols is replaced with a methyl group during synthesis. This hydrophobicity is then distributed throughout the entire structure of the particle’s backbone, resulting in a rugged hybrid (organic/inorganic) particle capable of operating at high speeds, high temperatures, and high pH. The presence of 33% fewer residual silanols (after the end-capping and bonding processes) also allows XTerra columns to create exceptionally sharp, high-efficiency peaks in basic compounds.

The general-purpose, reversed-phase XTerra Shield RP18 Column incorporates Waters’ patented embedded polar group technology as well, helping to improve peak shape performance for highly basic compounds. Compared to silica-based columns, these first-generation columns provide superior pH stability. The pH range on these columns is 2 pH to 12 pH.

The manufacturing of XTerra Columns begins with ultra-pure reagents to control the chemical composition and purity of the Hybrid particle. Each manufacturing step is conducted within narrow tolerances, and each column is tested individually. Both a Certificate of Batch Analysis and a Certificate of Column Efficiency are provided with each column. We recommend the use of an XTerra Shield RP18 VanGuard Cartridge, 125Å, 3.5 µm, 3.9 mm X 5 mm, 3/pk to extend column lifetime and protect against contaminants.

How Should XTerra Shield RP18 Columns Be Stored?

In order to achieve optimal column lifetime and performance, each XTerra Shield RP18 Column should be stored in 100% acetonitrile after use. Columns should never be stored in aqueous-based mobile phases that contain buffer or salts. If the mobile phase eluent contained acidic or alkaline additives, buffers, or salts, flush the column with at least 10 column volumes of HPLC grade water, and then at least 15 column volumes of 100% HPLC grade acetonitrile before storing. Failure to perform these steps could lead to precipitation of the buffer salt in the column or degradation of column performance. Completely seal the column using the supplied end plugs to avoid evaporation.
