An improved analytical protocol is demonstrated for the multi-residue determination of fluoroquinoline antibiotics in muscle and kidney tissue. Mixed-mode sorbents (anion and cation-exchange) were evaluated for the enrichment and cleanup of the aqueous extract of beef kidney and beef muscle before subsequent quantitation of the antibiotics using LC/MS and also using LC with fluorescence and UV detection. Recoveries of better than 70 % were obtained for 9 fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Separation of the 9 antibiotics is demonstrated using a reversed-phase LC column designed for optimized retention of polar analytes.
