Multidimensional chromatography is a technique that is capable of increasing the peak capacity of a method by transferring select components from a first dimension separation to a second dimension separation. Transfer between multiple separation dimensions can be performed through either a loop or trap column interface. Each dimension may use different pumps, column types, separation mechanisms, and mobile phase choices.

  • Coupling multiple separation dimensions can be utilized for the following purpose:
  • Qualify and quantify peaks hidden in a one-dimension separation
  • Sample enrich by injecting a large volume of sample
  • Inject high organic samples
  • Convert legacy methods by desalting or removing interferences before analysis
