Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry
Ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) is a technique that differentiates ions based on their size, shape, charge, and mass. IM-MS provides an orthogonal dimension of separation, which can simplify sample analysis. In IM-MS, ions are separated by the rate they move through a drift gas. Though there is more than one way to perform IM-MS separations, this event will focus on Traveling Wave IMS, which allows for ion separation in a short flight tube without sensitivity compromise, is compatible with LC-MS, and used on all Waters ion mobility mass spectrometers. IM-MS can be especially useful for obtaining cleaner spectra, differentiating isobaric compounds, and providing an additional form of confirmation. During this seminar, we will introduce the fundamentals of IM-MS and Waters ion mobility enabled mass spectrometers, and explore several applications where IM-MS can provide benefits in both research and routine analysis.
